Randall W. Maxey, M.D., Ph.D.
President-elect
Dr. Randall W. Maxey was elected President-elect of the National
Medical Association (NMA) at the Association’s Annual Convention
and Scientific Assembly in August 2002. In the course of his scientific
and academic career, Dr. Maxey has made outstanding contributions
to research regarding the prevention and treatment of renal failure
especially in cases complicated by cardiovascular disease. Over
the years, his work has been recognized with awards from peers,
colleagues, and medical professional organizations, i.e., the National
Medical Association and the Golden State Medical Association. In
1998, one of Dr. Maxey’s most significant achievements was
recognized by Guam Memorial Hospital when he provided new approaches
to preventing renal failure in diabetes mellitus and hypertension
in South Pacific islanders.
Dr. Maxey obtained his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from
the University of Cincinnati (1966), and concurrently, his Ph.D.
in cardiovascular pharmacology from Howard University Graduate
School and M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine (1966-1972).
Following postgraduate training in the department of medicine
at Harlem Hospital Center, Dr. Maxey was a postdoctoral fellow
at the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center
in Brooklyn, New York. From 1983 to 1996, Dr. Maxey served as
director of nephrology at Daniel Freeman Hospital and Robert F.
Kennedy Medical Center, both located in California. Currently,
Dr. Maxey serves concurrent positions as medical director, and
supervising medical director in California and at various locations
in Guam. Similarly, Dr. Maxey also has concurrent hospital appointments
in both California and Guam.
A devoted educator and mentor, Dr. Maxey has held academic appointments
at Charles R. Drew University, California, Downstate Medical Center,
New York, and Howard University, Washington, D.C., where he directed
the Academic Reinforcement Program and taught the basic sciences
in the College of Dentistry.
Dr. Maxey stays abreast of the latest research and technologies
related to his specialty with either a current or previous leadership
position in several professional organizations, including: chair,
Integrated Health and Managed Care Task Force, Membership Committee
and Board of Trustees, National Medical Association; past president,
Golden State Medical Association and Charles R. Drew Medical Society;
and founding president and board member, Association of Minority
Nephrologists. In addition, his membership in professional organizations
includes the American Society of Nephrology, International Society
for Artificial Internal Organs, and the American Society for Pharmacology
and Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Maxey has made significant contributions to scientific literature
related especially to prevention and management of renal failure.
His publications appear in several textbooks, and professional
journals.
Dr. Maxey has a distinguished career in academia, research and
professional leadership. He is also a humanitarian. With volunteer
participation in the community on boards like the Anti-Gang Advocacy
Program advisory Board, Dr. Maxey demonstrates his sensitivity
not only to medical concerns, but also to societal issues that
also need addressing.
Dr. Maxey currently resides in Los Angeles, CA with his wife.
