NMA, The Conscience of Medicine

egion VI is one of six regions of the National Medical Association (NMA).

Welcome

The NMA was established in October of 1895 and is the largest and oldest national professional organization representing over 30,000 physicians of African descent in the United States and the Virgin Islands. The members include primary care physicians, medical sub-specialists, surgical specialists, and other health care professionals.

The Association is geographically divided into six regions. Region VI includes the following states:  Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Six states within Region VI have a state society and one of those, California, has eight local/city affiliate societies. For complete information, see the regional map of state and local societies.

To fulfill its vision to be "the conscience of society for quality and parity in healthcare," the NMA
is committed to its mission "to advance the art and science of medicine for people of African descent through education, advocacy and health policy, promoting health and wellness, eliminating health disparities and sustaining physician viability."  These efforts will assist the NMA to improve the quality of health among minorities and disadvantaged people.  Throughout its history the NMA has focused primarily on health issues related to African Americans and medically underserved populations; however, its principles, goals, initiatives and philosophy encompass all of the patients our members serve.
